AI follow-ups that bring quiet customers back
When a customer stops replying mid-chat, the AI Agent sends up to two follow-up messages to bring them back. It picks the timing, you shape the message, on WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, TikTok, and your website.

Quiet chats are lost sales
People ask about a price, read the answer, and get busy. Without a nudge, many of those chats end right there.
- Chats stop mid‑wayA customer asks about price or availability, reads your answer, and goes quiet.
- No time to chase everyoneYour team is busy with new messages, so nobody checks back on yesterday’s quiet chats.
- Check‑ins come too lateBy the time someone writes again by hand, the customer has moved on.
- Paid leads go coldYou paid for the ad click. A lead who goes quiet after one question is budget left on the table.

What are AI follow‑ups?
AI follow-ups are messages an AI agent sends on its own when a customer stops replying during an active conversation. In Chatfuel, the AI Agent sends up to two of them to nudge the customer back into the chat.
You turn follow-ups on in Automations, for every source at once on Main bot or only for the sources you pick, and edit the prompt that shapes what they say. The AI Agent decides when to send each one based on the conversation. On WhatsApp, follow-ups go out only within the 24-hour messaging window.
How AI follow‑ups work in Chatfuel
- Open AutomationsGo to AI Agent → Automations. Main bot sets the default for every source, and each channel and traffic source has its own automation.
- Turn on Follow‑upsSwitch Follow-ups on for Main bot to cover everything, or only for the sources you choose, like Instagram DMs but not comments.
- Shape the messageEdit the follow-up prompt for each automation, so leads from ads and regular DMs get nudged in different ways.
- Let the AI Agent follow upWhen a customer goes quiet, the AI Agent sends up to two follow-ups. Prefer to set it up in chat? Ask the AI Co-pilot to do it for you.
What AI follow‑ups do
Where follow‑ups bring chats back
- Leads from adsPeople who tapped a Click-to-WhatsApp or Instagram ad, asked one question, and went quiet.
- Price questionsShoppers who got the price and needed a moment to think it over.
- Booking requestsClients who asked about a time but never picked one.
- Leads from commentsPeople who commented under a post, got your DM, and stopped replying.
Manual check‑ins vs AI follow‑ups
Follow-ups don’t replace your team. They cover the chats nobody has time to come back to.
| Factor | Manual check‑ins | AI follow‑ups |
|---|---|---|
| Quiet chats | Forgotten until someone checks | Up to two follow-ups from the AI Agent |
| Timing | Whenever the team remembers | Picked by the AI Agent from the conversation |
| What the message says | Typed by hand every time | Shaped by your prompt for each source |
| Channels | Checked app by app | WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, TikTok, website |
| WhatsApp 24‑hour window | Easy to miss | Follow-ups only go out inside it |
| Your team in the chat | Hard to tell who writes next | Follow-ups stop when a teammate takes over |

AI follow‑ups FAQ
Messages the AI Agent sends on its own when a customer stops replying during an active conversation. They nudge the customer back into the chat, so you don’t have to remember to check back by hand.
Up to two. When a customer goes quiet during an active conversation, the AI Agent sends two follow-up messages to nudge them back.
No. The timing is automatic: the AI Agent decides when to send each follow-up based on the conversation, and there’s no custom delay or schedule to set. You control whether follow-ups are on and what they say.
Yes. Each automation has a follow-up message prompt you can edit, so different sources can nudge customers in different ways. For example, leads from an ad can hear about the offer, while regular DMs get a friendly check-in.
Yes. Turn on Follow-ups for Main bot to use them everywhere, or only for the automations you choose, like Instagram DMs but not comments. Every source follows Main bot until you override the setting there. You can also ask the AI Co-pilot in chat, for example: “Turn on follow-ups, but only in Instagram DMs.”
All connected channels: WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook Messenger, TikTok, and the chat widget on your website.
On WhatsApp, follow-ups go out only within the 24-hour messaging window. If the window has closed, send a re-engage message from Broadcasts instead: it uses an approved WhatsApp template, and Meta charges per template message.
Follow-ups stop automatically. When a teammate assigns the chat to themselves or replies in it, the AI Agent stops responding there. To hand the chat back, assign it to the AI Agent again.
