What is the WhatsApp Business API?
The WhatsApp Business API, also called the WhatsApp Business Platform, is how businesses connect WhatsApp to software. Your number gets a WhatsApp Business account in Meta, and instead of answering from one phone, AI Agent and your team answer customers in Chatfuel.
The API works under Meta’s rules. Meta reviews your display name, you can reply freely within 24 hours of a customer’s last message, and after that you write with templates Meta has approved. Chatfuel is an official Meta Business Partner, so you connect the API right from Chatfuel settings.
WhatsApp Business app vs API
The app keeps every chat on your phone. The API connects your number to Chatfuel, where AI Agent and your team share the work.
| Factor | WhatsApp Business app | WhatsApp Business API with Chatfuel |
|---|---|---|
| Messages at night | Wait until morning | Answered by AI Agent, 24/7 |
| Routine questions | Typed by hand, one by one | Answered from your knowledge base |
| Taking over a chat | You answer every chat yourself | Your team steps in from live chat |
| Business verification | App accounts don’t go through it | Higher messaging limits, lower ban risk |
| Green badge | Not given to app accounts | Apply once your business is verified |
Two ways to get the API in Chatfuel

WhatsApp Business API FAQ
It’s how businesses connect WhatsApp to software like Chatfuel, also called the WhatsApp Business Platform. Your number gets a WhatsApp Business account in Meta, and AI Agent and your team answer customers from Chatfuel instead of one phone.
In the app, you answer chats by hand on your phone. The API connects your number to a platform like Chatfuel: AI Agent answers from your knowledge base, your team takes over in live chat, and you can verify your Meta business and apply for the green badge, which app accounts can’t get.
Yes, with coexistence. Connect the number you use in the app, keep replying from your phone, and let AI Agent answer in Chatfuel on the same number. While connecting, you can share up to 6 months of chats and contacts; this choice can’t be changed later.
A number that isn’t in use in WhatsApp Business and can get a code by text message or phone call, a Meta business portfolio (you can create one while connecting), and a display name that follows Meta’s rules. A number can be connected to only one provider at a time.
It’s strongly recommended: verification unlocks higher messaging limits and reduces ban risk, and some accounts can’t send messages at all until they’re verified. Upload a tax document, business registration, certificate of incorporation or business bank statement in Settings → WhatsApp. The legal name must match your Business Info exactly. It usually takes about 2–3 hours.
Not automatically. Business verification doesn’t add a checkmark. The green badge (Official Business Account) is a separate request to Meta, open only to API accounts after business verification, and Meta decides based on how well known your brand is. The blue badge is part of Meta Verified, a paid Meta subscription for the WhatsApp Business app, and isn’t available for numbers connected through Chatfuel.
You can reply freely within 24 hours of a customer’s last message, and every new message from them resets the timer. After the window closes, you can reach the customer only with a template approved by Meta: Utility, Marketing or Authentication.
Meta charges for WhatsApp messages by message type and the country of the customer’s number. Since 1 October 2026, replies inside the 24-hour window are paid too, while chats that start from click-to-WhatsApp ads are free for 72 hours. In Chatfuel, Meta’s fees come out of your wallet, so you get one bill.
Meta’s policies ban, among others, alcohol, tobacco and vaping, drugs, weapons, adult content, gambling, MLM and get-rich-quick schemes, crypto sales, payday loans, debt collection, live animals, supplements and telemedicine. Accounts in these categories get banned however carefully they send messages.
