# Why the Bot Sometimes Doesn't Respond to a Message

Occasionally a customer sends a message to your WhatsApp number, the message shows as delivered in their app, but the bot never replies.

Occasionally a customer sends a message to your WhatsApp number, the message shows as delivered in their app, but the bot never replies. This page explains why that happens and what to do about it.

## What's happening [#whats-happening]

When a customer sends you a WhatsApp message, WhatsApp needs to notify your automation so it can respond. That notification travels through WhatsApp's own delivery infrastructure before it reaches your bot.

Sometimes that notification is delayed or doesn't arrive at all — for a few seconds, a few minutes, or in rare cases longer. This is a transient issue on the WhatsApp platform side. When it happens, your bot never "sees" the message and stays silent, even though the customer's app shows the message as delivered.

This is not a sign that your bot is broken or misconfigured. It's an occasional gap in WhatsApp's own message routing, and it typically resolves on its own.

## What to do [#what-to-do]

**First, ask the customer to send the message again.** Most of the time, the next message goes through normally. Retrying is the fastest fix.

**Then check that your bot is working at all** by sending a test message yourself from a personal phone. If the bot responds to your test, the setup is fine and the original miss was a one-time delivery hiccup.

**If the bot doesn't respond to your test message either**, the issue may be with your WhatsApp connection rather than a delivery gap. Check the following:

* Make sure the phone number is still connected in Chatfuel → Settings → WhatsApp. If there's a warning or a "Reconnect" button, follow the steps in [Troubleshooting Phone Connection Issues](https://chatfuel.com/docs/whatsapp/troubleshooting-phone-connection-issues).
* If the bot is connected but still not responding, work through the [Problems with Sending Messages on WhatsApp](https://chatfuel.com/docs/whatsapp/problems-with-sending-messages-on-whatsapp) checklist.

## When the bot goes silent for many customers at once [#when-the-bot-goes-silent-for-many-customers-at-once]

If multiple customers report no response at the same time, and your own test message also gets no reply, there may be a broader temporary disruption affecting WhatsApp's delivery to automation platforms. In this case:

1. Wait 15–30 minutes and test again.
2. Check the [Meta Status page](https://metastatus.com/) to see if WhatsApp is reporting an incident.
3. If the issue continues beyond an hour, contact Chatfuel support with the affected phone number and approximate time the problem started.

## This is not the same as the 24-hour window [#this-is-not-the-same-as-the-24-hour-window]

If the bot stopped responding only to a *specific contact* — not to new messages from other people — the more likely cause is the [24-hour messaging window](https://chatfuel.com/docs/whatsapp/24-hour-messaging-window): the automation can only reply freely within 24 hours of the last message from that contact. This is a Meta policy, not a delivery issue.
