Let's say you're throwing a party. You've got a great venue, all decorated. You have scrumptious snacks and chilled drinks at the ready. The music is dance-worthy, the lighting's just right. Everything's perfect...except the fact that there are no guests. 🙈 This is exactly what happens when you build a fabulous Messenger chatbot, but fail to plan how you'll bring new users to it. It doesn't matter how masterfully you've designed your Messenger experience if there's no one there to experience it!

Good news: You can start inviting people to your "chatbot party" today, in just a few clicks. You can reach out to your prospects and customers in places where they're are already spending time—and you can make the invites so compelling, people can't help but accept.

Get new chatbot users from these three places

Back to our party analogy: You want to send invitations to your guests' homes, where they spend most of their time. Attracting people to your chatbot works the same way. You have to reach out to your target audience where they already are.

Here are the three key places your prospective chatbot users are spending time:

  1. Their Facebook and Instagram feeds 📱
  2. Your Facebook page 💬
  3. Your website 💻

The easiest way to bring users from these key sources to your Facebook bot is by using Entry Points. They're chatbot blocks you can set up in Chatfuel and link to your outside traffic sources in minutes. Turn them on and voilà; the new bot users will start coming to you. Once they do, your bot can take the reigns to engage, nurture, and convert them.

You can find Entry Points in the Flows tab of your Chatfuel dashboard. Just double-click in any blank area in the workspace, and a menu will appear where you can choose an Entry Point.

Let's dig in to how you can use the following Entry Points to drive new users to your bot from the three sources listed above:

  • Facebook Ads Entry Point (coming soon!)
  • Facebook Page Entry Point
  • Customer Chat Entry Point
  • Send to Messenger Entry Point
  • Comments Autoreply Entry Point (coming soon!)
  • REF Link Entry Point

💥Reminder: Once someone arrives at your chatbot, they have to respond to it at least once to be considered an official user. That's important, because once they're a user, you can reach out to them via bot with promotions in the future. So no matter which Entry Point you use to get them there, make sure your bot's first message is engaging and encourages a reply. You can get more tips on conversational design here.

#1. Attract bot users from Facebook and Instagram feeds

Facebook is the world's third most-visited website, with 74% of users logging in daily. Instagram was the sixth most-downloaded app in 2020 and has over a billion users. Facebook users spend an average of 58 minutes on the platform daily, and Instagram users spend 53. So no matter what industry you're in or where your customers live, you can bet a good portion of them hang out on these two networks.

So how can you get users on Facebook and Instagram to stop scrolling and go chat with your bot? Ads! Click-to-Messenger ads, specifically. They'll appear in users' feeds and will direct them to your bot in Messenger when clicked. Our Facebook Ads Entry Point is coming soon, and will make the ad setup process a breeze. 👉In the meantime, learn how to create click-to-Messenger ads on Facebook and on Instagram. It's just a matter of selecting the right ad type in Ads Manager, and crafting eye-catching creative. Once they're set up, you can monitor their performance natively in your dashboard, too.

#2. Attract bot users from your Facebook page

If your prospects and customers already gather on your business's Facebook page, listen up! There are two Entry Points you'll want to set up ASAP. To decide which one to start with, think about how users are currently interacting with your page.

👉If they're direct-messaging your page, the Facebook Page Entry Point should be your first priority. Set it up in Chatfuel to link your bot to the Send Message button on your Facebook page. Whenever a user clicks this button, your chatbot will instantly engage with them.

Here's the really special feature of this Entry Point, though. Chatfuel will automatically populate and display Icebreakers for new users, along with the regular Get Started button. Icebreakers are a set of common questions taken from the About info on your page. They'll appear as options for every first-time user, which will help nudge them to start a conversation. (Plus, Icebreakers will save you from having to answer these repetitive questions over and over again).

👉If they're commenting on your page posts, they're prime candidates for becoming chatbot users. You just have to get them into Messenger. That's where comments autoreply comes in—when you set up your chatbot to automatically respond to Facebook post comments.

The Comments Autoreply Entry Point is coming in our next release, which will make the setup of this functionality even easier and faster. (Join our Facebook community for updates!) For now, you can still set up this feature in Chatfuel's Grow tab.

Find Acquire Users from Comments, and click Add Rule. Then, simply customize the options. Decide if you want your Messenger chatbot to reply to comments on all of your posts, or one post in particular. Then choose if you want it to respond to all comments, or just those with certain keywords. You can also choose a block to send users who respond to your Facebook bot's initial message.

To help you get more comments (and therefore more new chatbot users with this feature), make sure your posts are engaging! Explicitly invite users to comment by asking a question that's relevant to your brand. (Resist the temptation to post irrelevant engagement bait like What's your favorite color? or Dogs or cats? just to get comments. Facebook can punish posts like these with lower reach.)

A few ideas for engaging posts that may help you get more comments include:

  • Run a Q&A ❓Feature a member of your team or a leader in your industry and open up a Q&A, where your audience can comment their questions. This type of content adds value, educates users about your brand, and can get you more bot users.
  • Ask for opinions 🗣 Get your audience involved by asking for their thoughts on something related to your brand, like the name or color of a new product. People love to share their opinions, which you can use to your advantage to get more users to your bot.
  • Do a giveaway or a contest 🎁 Giveaways and contests are powerful ways to boost post engagement. (Just make sure you follow Facebook’s rules.) For example, a clothing retailer could offer a discount code on swimwear to anyone who comments their favorite summer activity on a specific post. Your bot can send the code to commenters automatically. If they respond, they're officially a chatbot user you can reach out to again in the future!
  • Post user-generated content 📸 Ask for or share user-generated content like photos or videos taken by your existing customers. It'll help build a sense of community and encourage interaction in the comments.

#3. Attract bot users from your website

How much of your website traffic are you converting to leads or sales? If the percentage is low, your chatbot can help. You can add a free chatbot for your website that will pop up and offer to answer questions, recommend products, share coupon codes, or anything else that will move visitors down the funnel.

You can use Entry Points to have your friendly Messenger bot appear in two different places on your website:

👉As a chat bubble in the bottom-right corner of the page. Use the Customer Chat Entry Point to make this bubble appear on just your homepage, on all your website's pages, or just on some. It shows up as the Messenger icon in the bottom-right corner and expands into a small chat window when clicked. It's a great way to engage users as soon as they land on your site, and help them navigate to where they need to go.

Plus, as of August 2020, Facebook made the chat module even more powerful. Now, website visitors don't have to log into their Facebook account to chat with your Messenger bot. If they prefer, they can continue as a guest. Initial reports from Facebook show that guest mode can increase the number of users inquiring about your products or services by 45%! Guest mode is automatically enabled when you set up the Customer Chat Entry Point with Chatfuel.

👉Linked to a button anywhere on your site. The Send to Messenger Entry Point takes the form of a full-text button. You can place it anywhere on your website: product pages, the checkout screen, a pop-up, etc. The user will be asked to opt in when they click the button. Then, they'll be sent a message in Messenger. (They won't be redirected, and no chat window will open.)

The key to using this button effectively is the incentive! You've got to give users a reason to click it and opt in to messages from you. Facebook offers 22 different options for the button text, which you'll be able to choose from when you set up this Entry Point in Chatfuel. They can give you inspiration for how to incentivize website visitors to click. For example, you could choose the text that says:

  • Keep me updated for a button on the product page for an out-of-stock item. Your chatbot can remind the user on Messenger later when it's back in stock.
  • Tell me more for a button on the product page for a technical item, or one with lots of features. Your chatbot could message the user with a product recommendation flow to help them find the right item for them.
  • Send to Messenger for a button on the checkout page or in a pop-up, where you can offer a code for free shipping. Your chatbot can send it to the user instantly in Messenger so they can use it for their purchase.

Bonus: Attract bot users from email, social media stories, and more

What if your unique audience spends most of their time somewhere else, like in their email inboxes or watching your social media stories? No problem; just share the link to your bot there. There are two types of Facebook bot links you can generate and share:

👉The standard m.me link. Every chatbot has one: m.me/[your page username]. (Find out how to set up a username for your page.) When a user clicks this link, it'll take them to the beginning of the Messenger experience you've designed in your chatbot. (It's the same place users are taken when they click the Send Message button on your Facebook page, if you've activated the Facebook Page Entry Point.)

👉A REF link. A REF link leads users to a specific part of your bot, instead of to the start of the flow like the regular m.me link does. REF links look like this: m.me/[your page username]?ref=[name of a specific flow]. REF links are useful when you want to send users to your chatbot for one particular purpose, like to complete a survey or enter a contest. The REF link will take them straight to the relevant part of the bot, so they don't have to waste time going through the rest of the flow to get there.

To generate a REF link, add the REF Link Entry Point to your flow. Drag to connect it to the specific block you where you want to send users, and toggle the switch to turn it on. Now you'll be able to copy the link that appears and share it via email, on social media stories, or anywhere else you're communicating with your audience.

  • Example 💡Let's say you run an ecommerce store. In an email to users, you mention that they can claim a coupon code for 20% off their next purchase. You then add the REF link to the email. When they click, it'll take them right to the part of your Messenger bot where they can claim the coupon. They won't have to go through the menu selections and other bot content that isn't relevant to them first.

Entry Points give you options

Not sure which Entry Point to start with? No worries; you can set up as many inactive Entry Points as you want, so experimenting is easy. When you're ready to try one out, just toggle its switch on. If you want to try a different one later, toggle the first one off and switch on the next. You can even set up Entry Points before you've built your bot. Then, once you design the flow, just connect the Entry Point to a block and turn it on. You've got options!
